GEAS Apology

Greetings Grand Adventurers,

I would like to apologise on behalf of the committee to all of you who showed up today and could not find your GM. There was a bit of a communication SNAFU, so for now assume Wednesday games are full until another announcement is made.

Kind Regards,

GEAS Wednesday Games

Greetings Grand Adventurers,

Sorry for this being so short notice. We have 2 rooms in Pleasance, they aren’t the best and can maybe fit 3-4 games between them. I would suggest that everyone shows up, as last time, at 18:30 in the Teviot Lounge, so that people can find their GMs. Groups can then decide if they want to go to the Pleasance or find a table in Teviot.

Kind Regards,
Tudor Ferariu
Secretary 2015-17

First Wednesday Sessions and Spaces

Hi everybody!

First of all I’d like to thank everyone who showed up to our first session of Wednesday games. And an extra round of applause to the wonderful folks who stepped up offering to run games!
Secondly for anyone who happens to have missed the pitching, here is a list of games that have spaces and are running every Wednesday for the next several weeks. Send us an email at geas.committee if you wish to join a game and we’ll get you set up with the appropriate GM.

"Apocalypse World" has 2 spaces – run by Craig B

"The Incident at Portland Down" (dread system) has 1 space – run by Angus

"Dungeons and Dragons" (5th ed) has 1 space – run by Elfine

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has 3 spaces – run by Craig O

"Hero Quest" (bronze age fantasy setting) has 1-2 spaces – run by Jamie

"Pathfinder" (fantasy setting) has 3 spaces – run by Elise

"Pathfinder" (less fantasy, combined with Hillfolk system) has 1-2 spaces – run by Tom

As I said, just send us an email with your name, which game you would like to join and we’ll get you set up with said GM who can tell you where they intend to meet (the joy of our "consistent" room bookings…).
I hope you have a lovely time and if you have any problems give us a shout, either in person, at the committee mail, or to myself at geas.welfare or the tumblr page where you can post anonymously (geaswelfare.tumblr.com).

Remember, happiness is mandatory~!

GEAS Start of Term Game Pitches

Greetings Grand Adventurers,

First of all, thanks to all of you who came to the Introductory One-Shots, it’s the biggest turnout we’ve had in quite a while, and we hope you had a good time. Now onto business!

Our campaigns will be starting this week, and I’m here to make sure you understand how we operate. Games will be pitched as follows:

  • Wednesday Evening games will start on the 20th of September, and run from 18:30-23:00 in the Teviot Lounge, from which we will have to spread out to find spaces around Teviot, because the only room EUSA has been willing to give us is the Pleasance Cheviot Room, which fits maybe 2 games.
  • Sunday Afternoon games will start on the 24th of September and run from 12:30-17:00 in the Teviot Study.
  • Sunday Evening games will similarly start on the 24th of September, and run from 18:30-23:00 in the Teviot Study.

Every time slot is independent, so let’s say you join a game on Sunday Evening, your game will run every week in the Sunday Evening slot, you do not need to come to any of the other two, unless of course you also join a game in either of those slots. During the first pitch of each semester, new members have priority on joining games for at least half the maximum slots the GM is willing to take for that game.

Since last year, we have been using what we call Re-Pitches. Essentially at the beginning and halfway points of each semester, there will be a re-pitch session, this allows for games to continue, but also facilitates shorter campaigns by allowing some of them to end, new ones to begin, and players to move between games without them feeling awkward about leaving. This is less relevant now, since all of the games will be new for the start of the first semester, but during a re-pitch session, you can expect most games to continue, and players already in the game get priority to stay in their pre-existing group, but some can leave if they desire, and new people may join if there is space. In the case of games that end, most likely there will also be a new one looking for players, should you want to join it. This sounds complicated in writing but is easier understood in practice, trust me.

We don’t check for membership until third week of term, that way people get to see if they want to stay by the time they have to decide to get membership. You can get it only online, here, it costs 5 pounds for students and 10 for non-students for the whole year. If you REALLY can’t pay online, we will arrange something with you in person during one of the timeslots you are playing in.

Finally, remember that there is also a Pub Social on Friday the 22nd of September from 18:30 onward at The Southsider Pub, where we’ll just be having a drink and chatting about whatever random things people bring up at that particular moment. It’s all great fun and you get to meet a bunch of new people so pop on by if that sounds like your thing!

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to mail us and ask at this mail or on facebook. We hope to see you there at the Start of Term Pitches!

GEAS Fresher’s Week Newsletter

Greetings Grand Adventurers,

As you may have heard, or otherwise seen in the flyers, our Fresher’s Week Introductory One-Shots will be taking place on Saturday the 16th of September from 18:30-23:00 in the Highland Room, Pleasance, Come along and see if roleplaying is something you might enjoy, or just have some fun if you are already a fan. We highly encourage anyone interested in GMing to prepare a game in case we have an abundance of players, as a prepared GM can always just join a game as a player, but not the other way around.

There will also be a Pub Social on Friday the 22nd of September from 18:30 onward at The Southsider Pub, where you can meet and have a chat with some of our "veteran" members. Conversation topics can range anywhere from the weather, food, and games you enjoy, to the inevitable AI rebellion, time travel and other such subjects. Either way you should easily be able to find some like-minded individuals to talk to, so if you have some spare time next Friday do pop on by.

For more information don’t hesitate to contact us on this mail (geas.committee). You can also check our facebook page and site. I will be sending out another mail on Monday, further detailing how our weekly meetings work and reminding you where and when they start, but you can find some of that information in a previous post here, and on the flyer.

GEAS Fresher’s Fair

Greetings Grand Adventurers,

We need some able and willing volunteers to help with luring in unsuspecting victims new members during Fresher’s Week.

The Activities Fair will take place at 60 Pleasance on Wednesday the 13th and Thursday the 14th of September 2017 from 11am-4pm each day. There will be access from 9am to set up our table but we don’t need that much time, so I intend to be there at aprox 10:30. Our stall will be in the Tented Area behind the Salisbury Block. We should (unsurprisingly) be in the Gaming and Roleplaying area.

You don’t need to be there the entire time on both days, so just mail me if and when you’d be willing to help so I can coordinate something.

Tudor Ferariu

GEAS, Return of the Info-Dump (Start of Semester Edition)

Greetings Grand Adventurers,

We hope you all enjoyed your summer break and are ready for a new year of roleplaying! It’s already September and the new academic year is almost upon us, so my incessant mails will soon resume as we once again tackle our sub-optimal room bookings. But first, some information about our start of year activities.

As has been previously mentioned we will have out Fresher’s Week Introductory One-Shots on Saturday the 16th of September from 18:30-23:00 in the Highland Room, Pleasance, I’m sure everyone on the mailing list knows exactly what to expect from this event. We still need some GMs for this event, so we are on the safe side. As long as you show up it’s great, but we would appreciate you telling us that you intend to GM if you haven’t already.

There will also be a Pub Social on Friday the 22nd of September from 18:30 onward at The Southsider Pub, where we can meet again and talk after a long summer break. Take care not to scare the freshers until we can properly convert them to our ways.

Right, now Re-Pitches, despite what I said above about our rooms, the Sunday room bookings are looking quite good for this semester, it’s just Wednesday that is, as always, basically impossible to find rooms for.

  • Sunday Afternoon games will start on the 24th of September and run from 12:30-17:00 in the Teviot Study.
  • Sunday Evening games will similarly start on the 24th of September, and run from 18:30-23:00 in the Teviot Study.
  • Wednesday Evening games will start on the 20th of September, and run from 18:30-23:00, God knows where I’m still looking for a room, but let’s say the Teviot Lounge for now…

The times and places will stay the same for Sunday Evening and Afternoon games, unless otherwise specified in a future Newsletter. As for Wednesday, I’m in the process of talking something out and will have o get back to you when I have some actual answers.

Finally, the dates for next year’s National Student Roleplaying and Wargaming Competition, henceforth referred to as Student Nationals, are here! (April 6-8th, 2018) If you are interested in roleplaying with the best of the best, this is the event for you. More information to follow, but if you are interested in coming along please send our Events Coordinator Jason an email with the subject ‘Student Nationals’ at jasonebblewhite@gmail.com.

Also we’ve moved our site to a new provider and are hoping to use that for more announcements in the future, but this mail is already way too long so I’ll mention that again in the future.

Freshers Week

Greetings Grand Adventurers,
I hope you are all enjoying the summer holidays, and the Fringe if you are back in Edinburgh. Just a short mail to advertise our now confirmed Fresher’s Week Event. It will take place on Saturday the 16th of September from 18:30-23:00 in the Highland Room, Pleasance. We need some GMs for the event to actually run the One-Shots, and would like to hear from anyone interested in GMing for this event. There’s still plenty of time until then, but it’s better to be prepared. There will also be a Fresher’s Pub Social, the Activities Fair and possibly other things to come as well.

Tudor Ferariu
