How Pitches Work

Hello there, Adventurers!
Our Welcome Week One-Shots are happening tonight at 6pm, so I thought it’d be a good time to go over how pitches run on Discord. If you’re new to GEAS, or you haven’t attended pitches in a while, then please give this a read. We’ll go over this again at the start but it’s helpful if people have an idea of what to expect.

  • Firstly, and most importantly, you need to have a Discord account. These can be made for free at: https://discord.com/
  • Once you have an account you need to join the GEAS Discord server using this invite link: https://geas.org.uk/discord
  • At 6pm we’ll start a call on a voice channel in the Pitches category, where we’ll give a short introduction to the society and go over things like game safety.
  • After introductions are finished, the GMs will come on one at a time to pitch their game to you.
  • Once all GMs have spoken, we’ll open game sign-ups for newcomers to GEAS. This includes those that have joined us for summer games this year but have never played in a term-time campaign.
  • There will be an automated menu in the channel named #game-sign-ups, which will allow you to choose which game you’d like to join by reacting to it.
  • By selecting a game, you will automatically gain access to that game’s channels.
  • After all new players have joined a game, returning members of GEAS will be able to find a game to join.
  • Once pitches have finished you can move to your game’s channel where your GM will meet you.

As we’re online there’s the possibility that we might experience some technical difficulties, please bear with us if this happens. If you have any questions about pitches, online gaming, or GEAS in general then you can get in touch with us at geas.committee or on our Discord.

See you tonight!

Welcome Back

Greetings Adventurers!
Welcome back to GEAS! Hopefully you’ve made the most of the summer and are ready to get back to the gaming. We’ve got a lot happening this month and thus a lot of information to pass on, so buckle in for a long one.

If you missed our last email, then it’s important that you know that GEAS will be continuing to run online for this semester. If you’d like to know more about this choice, you can find our last email here:
https://geas.org.uk/2021/08/09/start-of-term-plans/

Memberships
GEAS memberships are now live on our EUSA page! We’re currently having some issues with sales, specifically to non-students. We’re waiting to hear back from EUSA on the issue and will let you know when it’s been resolved. We won’t start chasing people up on purchasing membership till later in the term, so please don’t worry if you can’t currently buy it.
As always prices are the same for student and non-student members, with Semester 1 membership costing £1.50 and Full Year membership costing £3.00. It can be purchased here:
https://www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/activities/view/geas

Start of Term Plans

Hey there Adventurers,

This is just a quick update on our plans for GEAS in September, we’ll be back in the coming weeks with more details on what’s coming up. We’re also wanted to let you know where things stand with social distancing restrictions now easing.

While we had hoped to be back in person, we’ll continue to run online for the first semester and plan to return to in-person gaming in January. I know that with restrictions lifting today you might have been hoping to be back in Teviot in September, however, this decision was made back in early July before room bookings closed. EUSA’s social distancing measures at the time wouldn’t reasonably allow for gaming, with a time limit of 90 minutes and heavily reduced room capacity.

It’s not all bad news though! We’re hoping to host some events in person this term, so keep an eye out for further announcements.

Welcome Week Events
Our traditional Freshers one-shots will be going ahead on Wednesday the 15th of September at 6pm, on the GEAS Discord server. If you’d like to GM a game on the night, then please submit your pitch here:

https://geas.org.uk/freshers

We’ll also be holding a pub quiz and social on Friday the 17th at 6pm.

September Pitches
Pitches for this term’s campaigns will be held on Wednesday the 22nd of September at 6pm and Sunday the 26th at 1pm and 6pm. We’re also now accepting pitches for campaigns, and you can submit your own here:

https://geas.org.uk/pitches

Keep on rolling,

Conpulsion Director Applications Are Open

Greetings adventurers,

We are now accepting applications for the position of Conpulsion Director.
For those of you who don’t know, Conpulsion is Scotland oldest gaming convention and involves 3 days of events and roleplaying sessions.
With restrictions being relaxed we are hopeful that this year we can go back to an in-person event, which would give the director more options when designing the convention, although obviously we will have to follow whatever the government’s guidance is at the time.

If you have your own idea of what Conpulsion could be this year and are interested in the role please send an email to geas.committee with the following information:
– Name
– Any relevant experience you have and why you think these will help in your role
– A brief description of what you would like to do as director (there will be a more in depth pitch to the committee if required later)

The deadline for this application is the 15th of August.

Finally, I should point out that this position is not only open to current students so any non-student members are also welcome to apply!

We look forward to receiving your applications.

Conpulsion Liaison Elected

Greetings, Adventurers!

Voting for the 2021/22 Conpulsion Liaison concluded earlier this week, and I’m happy to announce that Charlie Kelly has been re-elected to the role. He did a great job last year and we’re excited to welcome him back to the committee.

We’ll be starting the search for a convention director in the next few weeks, so if you’d be interested in running Conpulsion 2022, keep an eye out for further messages from us.

Election Reminder and Sunday Movie Night

Hey there, Adventurers!

Conpulsion Liaison
This is a final reminder to vote for this year’s Conpulsion Liaison, as it closes at 12pm on Monday. Once again, only student members can vote in the election, and you need to use your UoE Office account to do so.

We’re hoping to be back at Teviot Row House for 2022, where we can welcome back familiar faces and introduce our newer members to the joy of convention gaming. It only takes a couple of minutes to vote, and you’ll be helping us organise an event for both the society and the wider Scottish gaming community.

You can vote here:

https://geas.org.uk/ballot

Voting will remain open until Monday the 21st of June at 12pm.

Howl’s Moving Castle Movie Night

Tomorrow night, Sunday the 20th of June at 6pm, we’ll be hosting our first GEAS movie night! We’ll be watching Howl’s Moving Castle, the Ghibli classic based on the Diana Wynne Jones novel of the same name.

We’ll be watching it on Netflix and using the browser extension Teleparty, which will synchronise the movie for attendees and add a group chat to the site. Both Netflix and Teleparty are needed to take part, with the latter available for free for both Goggle Chrome and Microsoft Edge here:
https://www.netflixparty.com/

Conpulsion Liaison Election

Hello Adventurers!
Just a quick reminder that we’re currently in the process of electing a Conpulsion Liaison for next year’s convention. As usual, only student members can vote in the election and they’ll need to log in with their UoE Office account to do so. It’ll only take a couple of minutes to vote, and by doing so, you’ll help to keep a piece of Scottish gaming history alive.

The ballot can be found here:

Voting will remain open until Monday the 21st of June at 12pm.

Thanks for voting!
